I used to think the very same thing. It seems, however, that the grain
side does not stretch, so it must be that the flesh side compresses.

Because the 1/4" thick leather adds 1/4" to the radius (or 1/2" to the
diameter) and pi (3.14159) x 1/2 = 1.57, so if your wrist has a
circumference (I realize it's not really round, but it's close enough)
of exactly 8" then with the added 1/4" thickness of the leather it would
have a circumference of 9.57".

For the same reason the inner diameter of a pipe results in a smaller circle than the outer diameter. The equation you're using demands it. Starting with a flat piece of leather and rolling it, requires it to compress on the inside to account for the thickness.

We do a lot of dog collars, and ladies (and men's) bracelets. With thin leather, the measurements are pretty straight forward.

But if we make, say a bracelet, out of 8 oz or even 10 oz leather, the thickness of the leather seems to affect the placement of the snaps.

I just did a test. I have an 8" wrist. I wrapped a piece of 1/4" thick leather around with the same "tightness" as my cloth tape measure. My 8" wrist required a 9" long piece to exactly match. This is not including the length for the snaps. It is end-to end. We then add the length needed for whatever snaps we are using.

So why did it add an inch? I though c = d * pi. I realize the thickness of the leather is playing a role here, but how?

So far, we've sort of winged it pretty successfully.. Lots of measuring before cut and before we punch snap holes. Plus, we've already accounted for the diameter of the snaps. Think about it. A Line 20 snap is 1/4" in diameter. Since you have a male and female part, that is a potential 1/2" off. Line 24's are 3/8", which is a whopping 3/4" of potential error.

So what we basically do is take the actual piece we are going to use and wrap it around one of our wrists. We measure the amount we would need to add in order to fit us. We use that measurement to add to the customer's size. Crude, but it works well.

I'm trying to calculate how much to add to the length of the leather
that has to go around a curve. This is in connection with a Bible Cover
where it makes a 90-degree curve at each edge of the spine.

This is the way it seems to me: Measure the thickness of the leather
and let this measurement be represented by ' r '; the circumference of a
circle is 2 x 3.14159 x r, but since these are 90-degree turns, and
there are two of them, I would say that I need to add 2 x 3.14159 x r
all divided by 2 which would cancel the first 2 giving an effective
formula of 3.14159 r. So if my leather is 1/16" thick, it would add
between 3/16 and 1/4 of an inch.

I realize I could just wrap the leather around it and mark it, but my
design will have the front, back and spine in 3 separate pieces and will
be sewn together and I need to calculate where the spine will come to on
the front and rear panels so that I can design the carving patterns.

Does anyone know of a simpler way?

[flasah] Another Curvy Question

I am trying to make a protective leather cuff for my left forearm. The cuff will go from approximately my wrist to my elbow (just a wee bit short of both). I'm a falconer, and even though I wear a protective glove to guard against getting my flesh pierced by the hawk's talons, it does happen sometimes when she's free flying and comes in for a "short" landing.

I took a file folder and got a fairly snug fit. The problem is with the ends by the wrist and the elbow. How does one draw a nice curve on the ends to look right and fit?

I went to the Wickenburg Leather Show this last weekend. It was VERY VERY COOL. I loved it. I got to meet a lot of Leather Pros.

First, I met Bob Park, he is a very Kind and gracious man. We talked a couple of time durning the weekend. If you see him, PLEASE go up and intro yourself.

I had already knew Lana Smith, so I finally got to meet Chuck Smith. Wonderful man. Then I went into Barb Sorensen's of Y-Knots booth and did some Demos.

Here are a couple of pictures of the Vinegaroon dip. This is a piece of 9/10 oz leather and you can see the ripples where the weeping stopped. It was edge dipped from one end and then from the side up to the point of the notch at the end.

I also drew a thin "T" on it and the die doubled in width.

This one did not go gray as it seeped in, but it is pretty thick leather. The thinned leather has more of that effect.

Oh.. this is just dipped and not oiled.

I did an edge dip once and it was a disaster. The wicking action of the leather pulled the Vig in towards the center and made it a nasty grayish color that was irregular.

But you might try it with a brush and see if it works. Just remember it's not always an instant reaction like dye. And sometimes it comes out gray until it sits or you oil it

From what I've read, tool first just like you do with regular dye. I've never tried tooling the Vig'ed leather, but am fairly new to using it. But I understand that it makes it harder to tool.

I just finished a belt and even though the leather was saturated with the Vig, the impressions (stamps) I had stamped first are still nice and deep.

Once thing I am still working on is whether to do a soda rinse. The first batch I did leaves a pretty noticeable odor. The tutorials I read on it said that was a result of not enough metal dissolved and still having a high vinegar content. But this seems to be a pretty common occurrence. The soda wash (I've read to use either none, a weak or strong solutions.. not sure what the "true" one is) is supposed to neutralize the remaining vinegar. But all the things I've read say to make it a short rinse.... followed by a fresh water rinse. Others say just to use a fresh water rinse.

Then hang it and let it dry. The odor goes away after a few days of airing.

I've also just started wiping it down with neats foot oil while it's still wet. I let is soak in a bunch to restore the natural oils taken out by the soda/rinse... BUT, in this case, I made a mistake and left the belt in a fairly strong soda rinse for about an hour.. WAY too long... So I think it took more oil than normal...

One other tip I read about. Some folks make a solution of tea or coffee and wipe it on both sides of the leather first to add tannins to the leather when you vig it... Haven't done that yet.

If it's already tooled, it is very likely to also have some sort of
finish on it which just might inhibit the "dye" from doing it's thing.

Thank you, Tom & Dale, for the info. I did look a bit more into it online and found more about it, what it is, how it works, etc. Great idea! I would like to shake the hand of the man who came up with this procedure but that would be rather creepy, since he's been in the ground now for a very long time. LOL

Anyway, I am going to have to do this. I've got a pack of steel wool, some glass jars, and vinegar, so I'm going to start making some this weekend. I wonder, how would it work with leather that is already tooled? Would it cause the impressions to weaken/flatten out? I think it will be fun to experiment with this.

No, this creature has nothing to do with dyeing leather. This product
is also called "vinegar black" and there is quite a bit of info on it on
the web, even though there seems to be even more info about that arachnid.

Vinegaroon is an old, old method of dying leather black. It is actually Ferric Nitrate, I think. It reacts with the tannins in the leather and darkens it all the way through. And literally no rub-off.

Briefly, you take a couple of large 0000 steel wool and de-oil it with acetone and/or a torch. Put it in a plastic or glass jar. Pour about a quart of apple cider or white vinegar on it and cover. Poke a small hole in the lid - VERY IMPORTANT - to let the gases out. But you don't want to leave it wide open to the air at this time.

A couple of times a week, stir it up or cover the hole and shake it up. Do this for a month. Add steel wool if it all gets eaten. After a month, filter it out through a coffee filter or paper towels into another jar.

Let it air out for a week. Now you can cover it.

Actually, after a week or so, you can probably use it to blacken the leather, but it will smell. Oiling it and airing it out for a while usually take the smell away. You're smelling the vinegar. Once it's finished "cooking" most of the vinegar is converted, but til then, it does smell.

You can dip the leather, or use a swab to spread it on. The amount and speed of darkening will depend on the tannin content. After the treatment, you rinse the leather well, and oil it.

Hi everyone, I am new to this group but I have been reading all of the posts. Here is a good suggestion that works for me and its free. The shoes stores have plastic inserts that holds the shape of the shoes in shipment. These are thrown away after unpacking. I simple go the the stores and ask for these plastic inserts. They are hollow like straws but great for barrette sticks. I cut them to length. simple and easy. Another suggestion, I use plastic lids for my small patterns. They last forever and they are free. I hope they helps, I'll keep reading the post and enjoy them.

No, it has no base at all, just the two jaws joined at the bottom.
Attached is the sketch I made in SketchUp. The jaws are made out of 1
x 4's and the clamping blocks are formed from 2 x 4's. The two jaws are
bolted together through the two holes at the bottom which causes the
jaws to already have some tension, but probably not enough to hold a
project for stitching or lacing. The clam in this sketch is 38" tall.
