Re: [flasah] Square...is a square (sometimes)

Hello Dale,

...when cutting, it is best to scribe lines first (and check), rather than just mark points to cut.

To check if your 'Tandy square' is square...lay it onto a piece of photocopy paper (this paper is always square...90 degrees). In fact you can use photocopy paper as a 'square'...just mark your points with an awl.

If you are drawing a square, and, to check if it is 'square'...measure the diagonals (they should be equal).

I also use the back of discarded photocopies as a surface to glueing...this paper has many uses.

When I try to plumb a 7" x 7-1/2" piece of leather, if I place one edge
on the bottom and trim the right side, then rotate the leather
90-degrees and repeat, after the fourth trim it should have 4 90-degree
angles, but if I continue to the fifth measurement, it angles in to
where there is about 3/16" at the top that still appears to need
trimming.  I think 3/16" is quite a bit for a 7" run.

I never realized this before because I normally make all these kinds of
adjustments on the patterns before cutting.  This time I was trying to
modify a cutting to be a little larger than the pattern and decided I'd
better make sure all the sides were square.

I don't mean square in the sense that all sides are the same length, but
that all sides are at 90-degree angles.
