Every once in a while I check a few posts from the physicist to see what the rant of the day is. I see lately we’re back to how to get stuff wet and the best tool to hit a stamp. <sigh> I must admit up front that I’m not a physicist. At the same time, I do actually have qualifications that make me a rocket scientist (which does require some physics expertise) if that counts for anything. That being said, I can’t say I use any of that expertise when it comes to tooling. I have a simple rule of thumb for “casing.” If it needs to be wet, I put water on it. If it needs to be wetter, I put more water on it. I have a simple rule of thumb for striking stamps. Use whatever you want and like. Billy 2-shews used a hammer. He’s got some wicked cool stuff. If you can use the heel of a shoe, by all means feel free. This isn’t a challenge that requires a four-page dissertation or the square-root of pi. I know the physicist disagrees, but check out the photo (I sure hope it shows up!). It was “quick-cased” and I used a maul for tooling. Mr. Hurst found it suitable for the front cover of a Hidecrafter sale brochure...and I didn’t even include an explanation of the physics involved in the process. I just assumed he thought it was pretty good.

I'm just trying to find out if these things you say are still true with
the better quality leather that is for sale today today. Some of what
you say is, but there are some big holes in what you say from what I see
from day to day, with the current products. And why do you always find
the need to write a book when one line can say the same thing?
It's not me, a lot of members on here have said they do not believe what
you say because they have not seen any examples of work you have done
using these ideas! Not even anything you may have done a few years ago.
If you are basing everything on work your Daddy did in years of old, I
for one am not impressed with his work that I have seen published. Most
of it I would expect to find in a beginners level of companion, does not
have a lot of detail, and tends to be hidden behind what looks like
acrylic paints hiding the detail that may be there.
The malcontents in the peanut gallery...are the ones you are trying to
preach to, and the more you preach, the less they are listening. If you
can't show that something works, you will never get a lot of people to
believe that you even know what a peice of leather looks like let alone
how to use any tools on it.
