Re: [flasah] My phone case [magnet question]

maybe the magnet wasn't strong enough.  You can test it outside the case by passing the magnet over the face of the blackberry. When you hold it around the space bar it should change modes (the lite screen should turn off) to save power.  Then you can test it with a piece of leather that you will be using to see if it still works.  If not then you may need thinner leather or a stronger magnet.

Where is the right spot Art?

I made a case for my blackberry a few months ago, made the pattern from the original case, set the battery in the exact same spot as the original case and I could not for the life of me get it to work properly. I gave up after 3 or 4 attempts but any tips you can give would cause me to try again.

For the blackberry you need a small magnet built into the case.  This lets the Blackberry know to go into 'case mode'.
It turns the back lighting off  etc. You have to put it in the right spot or it won't work.

Great site, Art; which one do you find best? Do you use two for closure or one on flap and metal strip on body of case?

I work on the mobile computer side of Motorola. We have products that do similar things with a magnet. I've taken one of those magnets and am looking for a readily available source of the same strength. As soon as I find it I'll let you know. I should have something by this weekend at the latest.

Clark,

Love your phone case bro!

I have been wanting to make a few for folks but I was worried about using off the shelf magnets from the hobby shop or the magnetic clasp that Tandy sales....

Is there any chance of a small 'hobby' or clasp magnet being too strong??  Will it damage anything in the Blackberry? ???

This is the case I made for myself. I work for Motorola hense the reason for the batwings.

btw, I spoke with my engineering group about the magnet in the blackberry case. It should be placed just above the spacebar. and can be a small farrite magnet. I shaved a small piece off the magnet from the money clip kit. It is flexible and works great.
