Yes, Opel, I just might try that. I have a Lace Maker tool and today I
bought some leather. I got one 22 1/4 sq. ft. side of cowhide (don't
have a guage, so don't know exactly what the thickness is, but I'm gonna
guess 4 - 6 oz. It varies more than most. I also bought a hide of
Llamo (that's a male Llama) which is considerably thinner. I thought
that would be a novelty.
They had some "tooled" (a la Peruana) Llamo articles on display, and one
of them was a dead ringer for the Tom Thumb purse WITH LACE. I showed
it to the clerk and asked her where to get the lace. She said the maker
cut his own. I also asked in about a hundred other shops (I tend to
exaggerate a little) and the only thing anyone knew of was synthetic.
At one place, the owner offered to cut it for me at a cost of 4 soles
(approx. $1.36) per foot. That would be $204 for 50 yards which I can
buy in the USA for around $20 (plus shipping and possibly import duty of
course). Plus it would be in pieces of approx. 1 yard (meter) each.
