It's great that you cut your own leather, but did you punch round holes?
A lot of the old-timers that do a lot of stitching use a
diamond-shaped stab awl and punch one hole at a time (after marking the
spacing with an overstitch wheel), but you can also use a lacing punch
with angled tines. The angle helps a lot. That's what I use because
the only stab awl I have is round. When I was in the US a few months
ago I bought a diamond-shaped awl and brought it back to Peru with me,
but the very first time I tried to use it, the blade broke, so I'm right
back where I started.
