RE: [flasah] Can anyone ID these tools?
I did some Google search and found the Pliers tool marked Samson No. 1. It was in the advertising section of a 1922 Popular Mechanics! It is a hand punch. It punched metal through 20 gauge untempered steel and I think it said up to 3/16" which surprises me. The die in it looks like a small Greenlee punch.
It says it's also good for paper, leather cardboard, etc., up to 1/4" It came with changeable handles and dies from 1/16" to 1/4" holes in about 6 steps. But all I have it the 1/4" die set that came in it.
It is a heavy duty tool, I'll say that!
I'll probably eBay it as an antique maybe... not sure yet. Will probably do the same with the gravers and stuff since I have no use for them. Although the 52's and a couple others look like they might make a good tool to undercut things like the horse nostrils and so on.

Peter is definitely right about them being gravers. My friend the jeweler used them for his work. His were a little smaller but were the same thing. They are used for engraving. I would guess that with them being in with leather tools that the previous owner may have been doing some silversmithing Of course you can use them on most anything, even something like very fine wood carving. Gary PS: I could figure out what the pliers type tool was. Anybody else figure it out? --- On Fri, 3/4/11, Tom <tom@legacyleathercraft.com> wrote:
