Re: [flasah] Still alive?
Yes! I'm still new... But hanging on with email at the ready!
So just bought a Brother LS-2 (Consew 206 clone)... I'll be hand stitching till I figure out how to "wind bobbins"...
Anyone know of a bobbins winder for M class bobbins?
In other news- I'm looking for edge treatment assistance... I'm using beeswax and slicker and I get a TON of little peels and mushroom edges...
I am bevelling my edges prior and coloring before waxing...
Hi Kerri Duncan,
Not sure I understand just what is happening with your edges. Here's what I do: First I sand the edge to make sure all leathers are flush even; then I bevel the edges; then I usually dye the edge (not edge kote, just plain spirit dye of whatever color the project calls for). I'm not sure why, but then I let the dye dry only to then moisten the edge again with water. Then I apply gum tragacanth to the edge and then burnish it with a slicker. I use a hand slicker that has several different sized grooves. I have tried those circular ones (both plastic and wood) but was never pleased with them. I have also used beeswax instead of gum tragacanth, but both methods worked well.
Occasionally, with some projects, I can leave the leather just a little bit bigger than needed and then I can trim the entire edge at one time, cutting all leathers at once. This can eliminate the need for sanding. I used to use burnishing wheels that attach to the shaft of a Dremel, or other rotary tool. But for small projects, I finally just started grabbing my hand slicker and have the job finished by the time I could set up the Dremel.
Dunno if this will help or not.
