RE: [flasah] New to leatherworking
Good idea, and another is to check with companies that make memorials, headstones
etc...They can cut and polish granite or other stones for you. They may have scraps
or goofs that can't be sold and you can buy cheap...Hank

If you have a granite countertop company nearby, you can ask for a kitchen sink cutout for a tooling surface. I have gotten some for boy scouts free, I also got a couple larger ones for $1.00.

Subject: [flasah] New to leatherworking
Hi, I'm Kate. I have three sons, ages 11, 13 and 16, who did some leather work for 4H projects this past year. They really enjoyed it and want to do more. They now have the Tandy 7 piece basic set that was recommended by the 4H instructor and a mallet. We don't have any other tools yet.
What is a good beginner book for them and what other tools do they need? Is there a place to find free patterns? We found a few on the Tandy site that Matthew (13) may use on his bookmark he plans to make. Jason (11) has a narrow bracelet and all the patterns are too wide, so I'm hoping to find something for him. He's eager to get started.
Thanks,
Kate
