Dale ,Just pre-drill the plywood and even the particle board and that will prevent the plywood  or the particle board from splitting or breaking . Also use a countersink bit
to make the flat head flush and smooth.   Jess

I know a lot of you guys also are pretty handy with woodwork and thought

I'm trying to design a console for the top of my desk to hold my leather
tools.

I have found an amazing computer program that is very easy to use that
allows me to draw these things in 3D and the drawings can be rotated a
full 360 degrees in all directions. It is called Google Sketch-Up...
and it's free. There is also a pro version one must pay for, but I
don't find the free version to be what I would call "crippled."
