[flasah] Re: New to Leatherworking

I get the digest, so I'll try to reply to several of you in one post.

  > If you're reasonably near a Tandy store they have many options for you. A new book that is directed at kids is "Kidcraft Leathercraft Book," I recommend "Leather Crafting"
or "The Leathercraft Handbook." Tandy stores also offer classes, as well as all materials needed.

We're about half an hour away from a store, so not a problem picking up supplies.  Thanks for the book recommendations.

>>I am trying to understand what basic set you got them. It sounds like you may have gotten them the EZ To-DO Leathercraft Value Pack. That is the only one I can find in the catalog that has 7 projects but no tools, I think the part number you got was 55507-10 and I think that set is more or less a refill kit for the EZ To-DO Leathercraft Set which is part number 55507-00. That set comes with some basic tools, mallet, dye, etc.<<
I'm sorry, I meant it was a tool set.  I got out my catalog and it is Craftool Basic Seven Tool Set #8170-00.

>>Basic Leatherwork (part number 6008-00)
Leather Crafting (part number 61891-01)
Craftool Tech Tips (Part # 66056-00) by Al Stohlman. My opinion is most any book by Al Stohlman is worth it and helpful.

Your best bet is to go to a Tandy store and talk to the people there. They can help you pick out the tools needed for the projects you have and you can look through their book section and see which one catches your eye. There are also lots of web sites that have instructional sections but I think your best place to start is at Tandy.<<

Thanks.  Last time I had my little girls along, ages 3, 6 and 8, and it was my first time there, so I didn't have a clue.  Didn't really know what to ask or anything.  :-)  I'll have to go with just the boys so we can talk to the person at the store.

If you have a granite countertop company nearby, you can ask for a kitchen
sink cutout for a tooling surface. I have gotten some for boy scouts free, I
also got a couple larger ones for $1.00.

I don't know if I do have a granite countertop company nearby, but what a great idea!  I'll have to check that out.

Thanks!
